Aikido is a
Japanese martial art
developed by
Morihei Ueshiba
(14
December
1883–26
April
1969). Often
referred to as O-sensei,
Morihei Ueshiba
was a practitioner of several martial styles of Juijitsu, Kenjuitsu, Judo as
well as the weapons of the Yari (Spear), the Juken (Bayonet) and the Jo
(Staff). These were amalgamated by O-sensei with his philosophical viewpoint of
harmony and love into what we now know as Aikido.
Aikido is translated as the “Way of harmonizing Ki (or
life energy)"
and creates an ability to blend with an opponent to seek a resolution to
conflict. The Art aims to provide both technique and a mindset that
practitioners can use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker
from injury.
The actual application of
Aikido is a non confrontational and highly effective martial art. It uses the
redirection of the attacker's momentum without directly opposing it, throws,
joint locks, and also a limited capacity for striking the opponent.
