Weapons training
in aikido utilises traditional Japanese weapons of the short staff
(jō),
wooden sword (bokken),
and knife (tantō).
Weapons lessons incorporate weapon use and history, weapon-taking and
weapon-retention and are used to integrate both armed and unarmed aspects of the
art.
The founder of the style (O-sensei) developed much of empty handed aikido from
traditional sword and spear movements, so the practice of these movements is
generally for the purpose of giving insight into the origin of techniques and
movements, as well as vital practice of these basic building blocks.
A typical Yuishinkai Aikido class will include a component of weapons training.
